National Spokesperson, Author, Consultant
Movement Pioneer, Media Contributor
Dr. Gary Namie, a “Recovering Academic,” has extensive experience as a professor in management and psychology at several colleges including the University of Southern California and Scripps College. At Western Washington University, he developed and taught the first university course on psychological violence (bullying) at work. He is a social psychologist by training.
Gary was also a corporate Director of Organization Development for two regional hospital systems in Hawaii and California.
No egghead, he won national American Psychological Association and campus teaching awards. Pre-1997, he was a generalist and spoke about all aspects of the workplace.
His passion, expertise and natural humor are what audiences today remember most about his speeches.
His focus on Workplace Bullying began in 1997 when an abusive woman boss injured his wife, Dr. Ruth. Since then, he directs the Workplace Bullying Institute, the only U.S. research and education organization focused on the topic. He co-authored with Ruth two popular books, including The Bully At Work (Sourcebooks, 2003). His articles appear in magazines & peer-reviewed journals.
He coordinates citizen advocates to support state legislatures that introduce the anti-bullying Healthy Workplace Bill. To date, 12 states have introduced this landmark legislation. Not a lawyer, he works a great deal with them as an expert witness in bullying-related cases.
Dr. Namie is widely regarded by the media as North America’s foremost authority on Workplace Bullying, tapped as the expert in over 600 media interviews including the Today Show, Good Morning America, Nightline, Anderson Cooper, CNN American Morning, New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, San Francisco Chronicle, Chicago Tribune, Wall Street Journal, National Post, Toronto Star, and on CBC radio nationwide.
Dr. Namie is Senior Consultant for Work Doctor®, Inc., the premier consulting firm that since 1997 focuses on employer solutions to correct and prevent Workplace Bullying. All presentations are sprinkled with instructive lessons from the corporate and government employer trenches.
Dr. Namie’s professional background, consulting & advocacy experiences give him a comprehensive perspective on the dark side of the world of work matched by few others in the world.
