Matthew E. Adams is a New York Times and USA Today best-selling author, sports television personality, business consultant and a highly sought after speaker.
In 2002, Matthew co-authored Chicken Soup for the Soul of America, Stories to Heal the Heart of Our Nation, with Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen. The book quickly rose to the top spot in book rankings around the world and it was printed it multiple language translations. Proceeds from the book benefited the New York Area Relief Fund. Matthew described the experience of writing and compiling this book as one of the most emotional and rewarding experiences of his life. "In the face of such horror, we saw such nobility. As the worst of human nature was revealed we also saw the triumph of kindness, caring and love," said Matthew. "Even at Ground Zero, immediately following the attacks, the people of New York were so heroic and resolute. The events of September 11, 2001 did not make all of these great Americans heroes; it just exposed their heroism for the entire world to see."
Matthew calls the golf industry his "primary profession" and he has mastered his craft in the sport for almost twenty years both in golf club operations, golf equipment manufacturing and more recently, golf media. As such, he has become a well respected and recognized expert in many facets of the business but in particular in the area of the ever changing technology in golf equipment. "Most people choose to work in the golf industry as a life style. It takes a long time to forge a path of financial stability in any profession and golf is no different and probably even harder because so many people would literarily do it for nothing if they could. I have always believed in following your passion first, and then the money will follow. I am extremely fortunate to have made a career in the game I love. Making it in any vocation takes hard work. You may not be the most talented, most experienced, well connected, or smartest, but nobody can stop you from being the hardest worker. If you can't outshine them, out work them, because in the end hard work beats out glamour every time."
Matthew calls his success in sports television where he is a regular on The Golf Channel, a "twenty year overnight success story." Actually, Matthew began working in sports radio while still in high school. He would go to the radio station at 5:00 AM, edit and file his reports then race off to school. After college, Matthew began his career working in the production department at ESPN where his assignments were the NHL, NFL and SportsCenter. Matthew left ESPN to pursue his primary passion of working in the game of golf. However, he maintained his dual passions of media and golf establishing himself as a person who not only understood the complexity of modern golf equipment technology, but he could speak to it in simple, easy to understand terms to millions of viewers all over the world. "You have to make yourself distinctive. You must establish yourself as a unique authority, as an expert. This gives you credibility and the ability to use your forum as a basis of expansion to other areas where you have a passion."
Matthew has found that one of the areas where he has a passion, and also a very unique ability is in authoring books. Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen are two of the most giving, authentic and charitable people on this earth. They give so much more than they take. They started Chicken Soup for the Soul because they knew we could all benefit from sharing positive messages about our common human condition. They have helped millions of people realize that not only is it OK to aspire to reach your goals and be the best you can be, but that we owe it to ourselves to pursue the same regardless of the restrictions society or circumstance may place upon us. They gave me on opportunity to show them what I knew I could do and they changed my life.
Jack and Mark asked Matthew to co-author Chicken Soup for the NASCAR Soul, which was released in 2003. Within weeks, this book about heartwarming and touching stories surrounding the massively popular sport became the best selling NASCAR book of all time. NASCAR is second only to the NFL in popularity in the United States with 75 million fans. To the fans of auto racing, it is more than a sport, it is a life style. It determines everything from where they vacation to the clothes they buy to the beverage they drink. "Most of us spend our time racing through life, and NASCAR embodies our uniquely American zest for life. NASCAR is serious business, but it is about having fun while you are doing it, and I love that."
Following the success of his first NASCAR book in early 2005 Matthew released his next collaboration with Jack and Mark called, NASCAR Xtreme Race Journal for Kids. "NASCAR is about families. It is colorful, powerful and dynamic. It is the ultimate sport for kids because it represents good, solid family values, it is extremely exciting and it has something we all love from the time we were kids, awesome looking fast race cars." The NASCAR Xtreme Race Journal for Kids was an extremely unique project for Matthew because the book is packed with NASCAR trivia, word scrables, word finds, and great photography. "We wanted to make the book something kids could have a lot of fun with yet still read powerful and positives messages from other kids who face the same everyday challenges that all young people face. This book was a challenge in maintaining that balance, but I think we hit the mark."
In April of 2005, Matthew released The Fast and Lean Racing Cookbook co-authored with Robin Dallenbach, wife of racer Wally Dallenbach. The cookbook features the favorite recipes of many of auto racing's biggest stars including Richard Petty, Bobby Labonte, Tony Stewart, Dale Jarrett, and many, many more. "I admit that I am not much of a cook, but this book was all about fun. Families that love auto racing become totally engrossed in the sport, and this cookbook was a way to have fun with recipes that the drivers and other racing celebrities put on their tables. The cookbook is beautiful and a great way for fans to feel a little bit closer to their favorite drivers."
Next up on Matthew's busy literary schedule is his most ambitious project yet, a 2006 planned book called, Fairways, Life Lessons and Inspiration from the Greatest Game. The book's Foreword will be penned by none other than Arnold Palmer. "Fairways uses golf as a metaphor for life. There is so much that we can learn from the game that carries over to every aspect of our lives. Lessons about humility, perseverance, overcoming adversity, and facing our fears are just a few examples. Golf is a game that inspires passion and I think because of that I am more excited about this book then any I have done. In some ways, it represents a return to my roots in a literary sense."
Adams loves to bring his message of liberty, perspective, humor and empowerment to audiences all over the world. "Ultimately, I do not feel that I am a "motivational speaker" although I am often credited as such. Really, what I seek to do is help illuminate a path that will enable people to live the life they really want to live. People know what they want, what makes them happy, they just claim to not know how to get there. More often then not, the means to achieving their goals is within their grasp, they just do not allow themselves the liberty and privilege to be successful, feeling that accomplishment is reserved for others. I believe we all have a right, and an obligation, to be happy, fulfilled and to feel as though our life's pursuits are giving something back."
